Miami Valley CrossFit
1.) Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc… I am a caregiver for both of my parents. Occasionally, I get to play piano and direct music.
2.) How long have you been doing CrossFit? My first class was December 30, 2015.
3.) What brought you to Miami Valley CrossFit and CrossFit in general? After Christmas, I made the mistake of looking at Groupon and saw MVCF. Then I thought “Hmmm… That’s down the street. The deal seems good. Let me try it…” So, I sent MVCF a Facebook message and asked if they take – er – sizeable people. The answer said “Sure” and encouraged me to come down and try the class. I didn’t make it through the warmup. I figured “Well… This is probably where I need to be” and then purchased the Groupon special.
4.) What goals have you achieved? The first goals I wrote on the board were “Keep moving. Eat better. Get stronger.”, however my REAL goals were “1. Learn the movements. 2. Convince Scott and Bry I’m not dying. 3. Convince MYSELF I’m not dying.” I think I accomplished #2 and am making headway on #1 and #3. Okay… and I actually made progress on the Keep moving/ Eat Better/ Get Stronger goals, too.
5.) What are your new goals? I want to string 10 Double Unders together unbroken, do a pull up, and a toes-to-bar. I’m actually not too far away on the toes-to-bar.
6.) What is your favorite movement? This will sound bad, especially seeing that I’ve only ever done it twice: Flipping the tire. I don’t know why. Maybe it reminds me of the old tire swing I had when I was a kid. Maybe I’m imagining pushing a car over. I don’t get it. I like flipping the tire.
7.) What is your least favorite movement? Burpees. I’m convinced they were created by Satan himself.
8.) What is your favorite quote or words to live by?I’ve got a few, but I’ll say The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. (There are many versions, but it ultimately says the same thing.)
9.) Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining? Don’t worry about being the worst person in the class. Go with the intention of getting through the door, learning the movements, and taking every victory you can. You’ll make progress. Oh… and don’t put too much stock in the scale. When I first started, my weight actually crept up and wouldn’t budge. It was a while (months, actually) before it started going in the other direction. During that entire time, I was still making progress. Drink your water.
10.) What do you love about Miami Valley CrossFit? The instruction: You have knowledgeable coaches constantly watching what you’re doing, correcting you on form, and challenging you to take it to the next level every time. The community: Everybody’s there encouraging each other, helping each other out, and are genuinely awesome people even once the equipment is put away. No matter how competitive anything is at the moment, even more than that is the sense that “We are all in this together.”
1.) Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc…
My name is Rachel, I’m currently in grad school studying for my MBA and work in Human Resources. I’d say I like CrossFit, but that’s probably obvious, haha. I like hanging out with friends and cooking.
2.) How long have you been doing CrossFit? I think it’ll be a year and a half this summer.
3.) What brought you to Miami Valley CrossFit and CrossFit in general? I had a friend who did CrossFit and loved it; she inspired me to try it. Miami Valley CrossFit happened to be conveniently located for me.
4.) What goals have you achieved?
I’ve achieved so many goals! I think the biggest goal I’ve achieved is the change in mindset. Working out is no longer a chore; it’s become something that I love. I’m also not so afraid of weights anymore – I still have a long way to go but, when I first started, I could barely even use the 15lb training bar. I can now Rx a few barbell workouts.
5.) What are your new ones?
To be able to string T2B and Doubleunders together and just to keep improving in overall strength and Rx’ing as much as I can.
6.) What is your favorite movement? Ha, um does running count? – Perhaps, power cleans. It really depends on what mood I’m in. I’d probably change my answer if you asked me tomorrow.
7.) What is your least favorite movement? Wall balls and bench press!
8.) What is your favorite quote or words to live by? “Carpe Diem”, do something everyday that is outside your comfort zone and never stop trying. “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying ‘I will try again tomorrow.’”
9.) Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining? Just do it – the hardest part is always starting. Yes, you will be sore and it’ll be hard, but that’s how you know you’re improving. Don’t be afraid to scale and don’t give up when you’re so sore you can’t even walk (trust me, I’ve been there). Just keep coming, slow and steady. You’ll improve by leaps and bounds, I promise.
10.) What do you love about Miami Valley CrossFit? The people! Everyone is so encouraging and supportive. I’ve made some really great friends who I know will never stop pushing me to be the best I can possibly be.
1). Tell us a little bit about yourself, hobbies, occupation, etc... I worked in banking for 20 years and left two years ago. I now work for the City of Germantown. I do nails for fun and love to spend time with my family at our lake house in Tennessee. My favorite things to do are having dance parties with my girls and have girl time with my friends.
2.) How long have you been doing CrossFit? I started CrossFit in November 2015
3.) What brought you to Miami Valley CrossFit and CrossFit in general? My good friend Kari asked me to go to Miami Valley CrossFit and try it out. I needed to do something to increase my strength and help me get in better shape. In 2007 I lost my Mom to a horrible disease. She lost all of her muscle function and became bedridden. It was heartbreaking watching her deteriorate. I was going to lose the one person that was bigger than life to me. She never really exercised or took time for herself. She devoted all her time and energy to us kids. I’ve never really been “athletic” I always danced and been somewhat active but nothing like CrossFit. I can’t tell you the number of times I have completed a WOD and got in my car after and just cried. Happy tears of course! I do CrossFit to make me stronger so that I can hopefully be here to watch my grandchildren grow up. The best days at the box are the days that my daughter goes with me. It’s those days that I push myself more and I will always have those memories. It’s priceless.
4.) What goals have you acieved? I am still amazed every day at my progress. When I started at MVC I couldn’t lift a barbell or do a pull up at all. I could barely lift my arm above my head to put laundry away. Today I can clean 65 to 75 pounds and can do pull ups with one band. When I walked in all I really wanted was to get strong enough to put my husband’s jeans on the top shelf in the closet. LOL
5.) What are your new goals? My new goals are to continue getting stronger and finish a workout with an RX next to my name.
6. ) What is your favorite movement? My favorite movement is a clean and jerk and kettlebell swing.
7.) What is your least favorite movement? My least favorite is the snatch and burpee.
8.) What is your favorite quote or words to live by? Worry Less, Love More, Work Hard, Laugh Daily and Dance Often.
9. ) Do you have any advice to new members or someone thinking about joining? My advice to new members would be to give it a chance. Walking in the front door is the hardest part. We’re all at different levels. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. There’s nothing like people cheering you on and then accomplishing something you never imagined possible. It’s so empowering.
10.) What do you love about Miami Valley CrossFit? I love MVC! I love my trainers and the MVC Community! It is awesome to have a whole community that helps to push you toward your goals and a Coaches that want you to succeed.
